The Biology of the Race Problem

Written by Dr. Wesley Critz George, and published by the Government of Alabama in 1962, this report serves as a document of the official backlash to the Supreme Court's ruling in the case of Brown v. Board of Education, which ended segregation in the Southern United States. George, a former head of the Department of Anatomy at the University of North Carolina Medical School, finds that there are inherent genetic differences between whites and African-Americans, and that these differences manifest themselves in societal indicators such as test scores and crime rates. The report concludes by stating that the United States should not "promote racial amalgamation" by allowing the races to mix, and instead suggests that segregation is both socially and biologically the best policy to follow.

This report clearly documents the institutional racism that existed in the Southern U.S. well into the 1960s, as well as demonstrates the scientific arguments that have been employed to justify racial segregation and eugenics.

Innovative Financing: Banks and Energy Conservation

Although this document was written more than 30 years ago, many of its suggestions are shockingly similar to those found in the news today. In essence, this report outlines a plan to restructure the nation's financial institutions to provide consumers with cash incentives to encourage energy conservation. It suggests that "banks might develop energy conservation programs as... a way to reduce energy-related loan losses," as well as "forestall increased government involvement in bank operations."

This is one of dozens of documents produced by the Department of Energy in the late 1970s to promote energy conservation, and while much of the data are now outdated, many of the lessons dealing with encouraging participation in these reports are just as valid today as they were in the last century. Items like these can serve as a great jumping off point for a research project comparing government action and public participation across the decades, as well as the evolution of energy conservation techniques.

This pioneering book begins to remedy that neglect, first by celebrating the richness and ingenuity of the world of Islamic technology and then by pointing the way forward to its more detailed exploration. Lavishly illustrated, this book explores the major technological achievements of Islamic civilisations. Review

It deserves to succeed in bringing its subject to a new audience in the West as well as instilling pride in past achievements in the Middle East.' History Today. British Intelligence Objectives Sub-Committee

They also prepared reports on whole industries - notably the German dye industry - and on construction projects, such as German underground factories. This collection would be useful for researching industrial activities of Nazi Germany during the war.
